CAEL Preparation for Academic Success<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can use the CAEL exam for both university\/college applications and some professional accreditation. It’s a very popular test among immigration consultants who need to show their English proficiency in order to get licensed, and among veterinarians who trained outside Canada and are updating their certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CAEL was originally designed for native English speakers who failed their high school English and needed an alternative route to get into universities and colleges. That’s why it puts so much emphasis on things that don’t just reflect fluency, including organization, note taking, accurate comprehension, and well\u2011structured written responses that integrate multiple sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding CAEL scoring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

CAEL scoring uses a 10\u201390 scale to describe how well you use English in an academic setting. The higher scores indicate stronger proficiency while the lower scores suggest that you’ll struggle with the demands of the academic environment. The system is designed to mirror real university tasks, so each score reflects how effectively you read, listen, write, and speak in an integrated, academic context. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To show a Canadian university that your English is good enough to cope with the demands of academic life, you usually need to score a minimum of 70 in each of the four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). For programs that have a lot of applicants and are highly competitive, you may need to score in the 80’s<\/p>\n\n\n\n
