IELTS General Writing

Use the following IELTS General writing topics to help you prepare for your test.

In the test, they will ask you to write two essays: the first asks you to write a letter, and the second requires you to express your opinion about a given topic.

IELTS General Writing – Task 1

The letter may be formal, semi-formal or informal.

You may be asked to make a complaint or request, provide advice, or apologize.

The question tells you exactly what to write about. You must write something about each specific point.

Use the titles below to practice writing a letter.

When your letter is finished, send it to me. I will tell you what to improve before your test.

IELTS General Writing Topics – 1

1. A member of your family is thinking about going to university. Write an email to your family member explaining:

  • Why some people go to university (new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge).
  • Why some prefer universities far from home.
  • Which courses you think would be interesting and/or useful.

2. A family member recently had a baby and is overwhelmed by parenting. Write an email:

  • Encouraging the young couple in their role as new parents.
  • Explaining why you think that parents are the best teachers.
  • Offering support (suggestions for organizations they could turn to, financial, babysitting, etc.)

3. You are an international student studying English at a private language school. Your courses were expensive and you are disappointed with the quality of instruction, materials, and the time keeping of the other students . Write a letter of complaint to the School Principal and  suggest how you would like the issue to be resolved.

4. You recently stayed in a hotel where the service was slow and the room was dirty. Write a letter to the hotel manager complaining about the accommodation and suggesting how the issue might be resolved.

5. You are looking for a part-time job at the local golf club. Write a letter to the manager in which you:

  • Introduce yourself
  • explain what experience and special skills you have
  • tell him/her when you think you could start

6. Your company is sending you to Vancouver on a month long project. You need a place to stay while you are there. Write a letter to the Manor Management Real Estate Agency. In your letter:

  • explain the situation
  • describe the kind of accommodation you would like
  • provide the dates you will need it

IELTS General Writing – Task 2

The second IELTS General Writing topic is an essay expressing your opinion about something.

Your essay must have a clear structure and a variety of sentence structures. You must include:

  • An introduction that puts the reader in the head space.
  • An overview that identifies your main points.
  • A paragraph for each of your main points.
  • A conclusion.

IELTS General Writing Topics – 2

1. A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory near your community. Do you support or oppose the factory? Explain your position.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

2. You are a volunteer at the local community theater group. You have been asked whether the group should spend its money on costumes or on storage. Which alternative do you support? Explain your position.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

3. Your company is considering whether or not to sponsor a float in the upcoming community parade. Your superiors have asked for your opinion. Do you support or oppose the investment? What possible advantages or disadvantages might there be?
Explain your position giving reasons for your answer and including relevant examples from your own experience.

4. Do you think most celebrities would vote for a law that made it illegal for photographers to take and publish photos of people without permission? Would you vote for or against a law like that?
Explain your position with reasons, details, and examples.

5. Some people believe grandparents offer the best childcare for working parents while others think grandparents shouldn’t be involved in disciplining children. Discuss the advantages of both.
