English Tenses Lessons – Active Voice
The English Tenses lessons below are intended for students who need more clarity and practice with their tenses. Typically, students taking these lessons are aiming for 7+ in IELTS, 70+ in CAEL, or 9+ in CELPIP.
You do not need to know grammatical terms to take these English tenses lessons.
All of these lessons are one-on-one using zoom, but if you would like to take the class with a friend, you can share the cost.

Present Continuous
When do you use the present continuous tense in English?
The focus of this lesson is to clarify when to use the present continuous tense and to make sure that you use the complete unit when you speak and write.
Present Simple
The simple present tense is the most common tense in English, so it’s really critical that you have a clear idea of when to use it.
In this class, you’ll review the structure and timeless nature of the simple present tense and practice using it as you speak and write.
Present Tense with adjectives & nouns
Tenses can get confusing when you start adding adjectives and nouns, but missing bits of the structure creates huge communication problems – so we need to fix that!
Past Continuous
In this class, you’ll review the past continuous tense and practice using it when speaking and writing.
Past Simple
The simple past and its moving, but mandatory ‘d’ sound can be extremely confusing. Join me for some practice and clarity.
Past Tense with adjectives & nouns
The focus of this English tenses lesson is to clarify the past tense with adjectives and nouns and practice using it.
Future Continuous
Remembering the ‘be’ in the future continuous tense often catches non-native speakers. We’ll review the structure of the future continuous tense and practice using it.
Future Simple
Distinguishing between prediction and intention is a critical skill when it comes to using the future simple. We’ll review the structures and practice using them correctly.
Future Tense with adjectives & nouns
In this English tenses lesson, you’ll review and practice the future tense with adjectives and nouns.
Present Perfect Continuous
The focus of this class is to clarify when to use the present perfect continuous tense and make sure that you use all of its components when you speak and write.
Present Perfect Simple
Discover when to use the present perfect correctly by understanding what it really means. You’ll get lots of practice using it in this class.
Present Perfect Tense with adjectives & nouns
In this class, you’ll review the present perfect tense form that you need to use with adjectives and nouns – and practice using it.
Past Perfect Continuous
English gets complicated when you start using tenses to sequence two actions that both occurred in the past. We’ll review the format of the past perfect continuous and practice using it.
Past Perfect Simple
The focus of this class is to clarify when to use the past perfect simple tense and make sure that you use it in the right place when you sequence past events.
Past Perfect Tense with adjectives & nouns
This class will give you lots of clarity about using the past perfect with adjectives and nouns.
Future Perfect Continuous
In this class, you’ll review the future perfect continuous tense and practice using it as you speak and write.
Future Perfect Simple
Sequencing two events that both occur in the future can be a nightmare. We’ll look at how to use the future perfect simple tense correctly to talk about the future.
Future Perfect Tense with adjectives & nouns
Review and practice using the future perfect with adjectives and nouns.
English Tenses Lessons – Passive Voice
Present Continuous Passive
Learn how to form and when to use the present continuous tense in its passive form.
Present Simple Passive
In this class, you’ll review the passive form of the present simple tense and practice using it to put the emphasis on the action rather than on the person doing it.
Past Continuous Passive
The focus of this class is on the passive form of the past continuous. We’ll review its formation and get lots of practice using it.
Past Simple Passive
This English tenses lesson focuses on the passive form of the simple past tense. You’ll get lots of practice using it while speaking and writing.
Passive Future
Like all passives, the passive form of the future tense moves the emphasis from the person doing the action to the action itself. We’ll review the formation and practice using it in this class.
Passive Present Perfect
The passive form of the present perfect is the subject of this class. We’ll look at the structure, review what it means, and practice using it.
Passive Past Perfect
The passive form of the past perfect tense may not be the most common of English tenses, but if you need to sequence two past actions, and want to be diplomatic about it, it’s something you need to know.
Passive Future Perfect
The focus of this class is to clarify when to use the passive form of the future perfect tense to take the emphasis off the person and put it on to the action as you sequence two events in the future.
