Riding the Gondola

Fill in the gaps with the correct form of the continuous present tense.

Part 1

They are facing the front of the boat, and they are watching the activity on the waterway.

These people are probably tourists, so they may be taking a tour of the city by boat. They may be staying in a nearby hotel, and they may be planning their day, or wondering where to eat.

Part 2

Another gondola is traveling north. The driver is wearing a striped shirt and jeans. He is also holding the rudder. He is steering the boat under a bridge. There are five passengers on his boat, and all of them are sitting in front of him. One of the passengers is facing the driver. He is not looking at the activity ahead. All of the passengers are wearing hats.

The passengers on this boat are not tourists; therefore, they are using the boat like a bus, and it is taking them home after a long day at work.

Part 3

There is another boat coming under the bridge. It also has passengers and a driver. The driver is trying not to crash into the other boats. All of the boats are moving very slowly because all of the passengers are worrying about a crash. All of the drivers are being very careful.

The people on this boat are tourists who are traveling together. They are worrying about the time because the boat tour of the city is taking a long time – much longer than they expected. They are beginning to think that their bus will leave without them.

There is a bridge over the water. Some people are standing on the bridge and watching the boats. They are expecting the boats to crash, and they are waiting for something to happen.
