Art Vocabulary

Art – a piece of art (uncountable noun – three pieces of art)

Canvas – the fabric board that painters paint on.

Painting – a picture that a painter paints on a canvas.

Murals – large paintings that usually cover walls. Banksy paints a lot of murals and is famous for them.

Sculptures – shapes that are carved into stone or metal. ‘The little mermaid’ in Denmark is a statue.

Bust – a sculpture of a head and shoulders.

Portrait – a painting of a person.

Masterpiece – the best piece of art that an artist creates.

Brush – a common tool with lots of bristles that artists use when they paint.

Palette – the board that painters squeeze their paints onto when they are getting ready to paint.

Frame – the border that you put on a finished painting before hanging it on a wall.

Vivid colours – very bright colours.
